Nachdem ich am Sunset Crater – gleich nördlich von Flagstaff – auf schwarzem Vulkansand campiert habe, ging es weiter in den Norden Arizonas. Beeindruckend dabei der abrupte Wechsel der Landschaft: Erst im Pinienwald am Vulkankrater, stehst du plötzlich in Steppenlandschaft und blickst hinab auf rote Erde und Felsen.
Ich hab mich auch bald vom Asphalt des Highways getrennt, um eben diese rote Erde unter die Räder zu nehmen und da waren dann schon diese Spalten im Erdboden…die immer größer und breiter wurden 😉 .
Dann hört der Weg plötzlich auf und Du stehst vor diesem völlig unrealen Canyon – und stellst einfach das Zelt dort auf . Es kann manchmal so schön und einfach zugleich sein. Hab ich den kitschigen Sonnenuntergang erwähnt?

After a night at Sunset Crater near Flagstaff – camping on black volcanic sand – I rode on north. Pretty amazing is the change of landscape within minutes: Just left pine trees and black sand, now standing in a desert environment looking down on red soil and rocks.
I soon left tarmac to get this red soil under my wheels and after a while those washes started to get little canyons and they got bigger and bigger 😉
Then the trail ends and you’re standing in front of this huge, totally unreal gap – and just set up the tent right there. Sometimes it’s so beautiful and easy….oh, did I mention the kitschy sunset?
